From the Ivory Towers to the Grass Roots Movements – Bridging Research, Discourses and Practices in Women’s Sport

Abstract

 

The aim of this article is to highlight the impact of women’s and gender studies on the development of physical activities and sport, to explain the importance of science and research for the empowerment of women on and off sports fields and to demonstrate the importance of an alliance between researchers and practitioners since questions, theories and methods depend on in-depth insights into the research fields. It will be demonstrated how research can provide knowledge which is essential in order to change sport discourses and practices. Special attention will be given to the development of women’s and gender studies in sport sciences, focusing on the effects of these studies on women’s empowerment and development and their benefits.
